What is a word meaning "to be named after"?

I was texting my friend and long story short I told her to look up sirens (I meant the mythological creature) to which she replied, "you mean like the thing on firetrucks?" I tried to explain to her that that "thing" is named after a made up creature. I know there is a word that means 'to be named after something else' (e.g. sirens on a firetruck are named after the beast), but it evades me. The conversation is over now, but this is really bugging me. It may also be an idiom or have a broader definition meaning to be derived from. Please help me.
