Pride and Prejudice question? Character confusions?

I'm not very far into the novel yet (18% according to my Kindle) but I already have a question. Multiple times, Mr. Collins is referred to as being a cousin to the Bennet family. He then goes and states that he plans to marry Jane then changes to Elizabeth. Is he actually a member of the family or did the term "cousin" hold a different meaning during this time period?
